1. Centrifugal Force is Key:
-Tangential Entry: Water containing sand enters the hydrocyclone through a tangential inlet, creating a swirling vortex within the cylindrical chamber.
-Spinning Action: This swirling motion generates strong centrifugal force, pushing the denser sand particles outward towards the walls of the cyclone.
2. Separation and Collection:
-Downward Spiral: The sand particles, being heavier, are forced to spiral downwards along the cyclone walls.
-Underflow Outlet: This downward spiral leads to a smaller opening at the bottom of the cone-shaped section called the underflow outlet, where the concentrated sand is discharged.
3. Clean Water Rises:
-Inner Vortex: Meanwhile, the cleaner water, being lighter, forms an inner vortex and rises upwards towards the center of the cyclone.
-Overflow Outlet: This cleaner water exits through an overflow outlet at the top of the hydrocyclone.
-In essence, a hydrocyclone sand separator uses the principles of centrifugal force and gravity to efficiently separate sand from water. The spinning action forces the heavier sand outwards and downwards, while the cleaner water naturally rises and exits through a separate outlet.
